What was your athletic background, if any?

None, unless you count 2 years of gymnastics/ ballet when I was about 6 years old.

What led you to Crossfit and CFA specifically?

Melinda Vereeke.  She had been doing Crossfit for awhile and when she switched to CFA she convinced me to join her at the 5:45am class.

What do you do when you're not at CFA?

I am busy doing all of the mom things with my kiddos, working, doing anything outside, hanging out with friends, camping, pretty much just trying to enjoy a little piece of each day..

When did you realize that CrossFit is right for you?

Pretty much, right away.  I loved that Josh or Kate could program a workout and I didn’t have to think about what I needed to work on that day.

Do you remember your first WOD?

“Karen” which is 150 wallballs.  I remember thinking I was never coming back after that workout, but here I am.

What is your favorite or least favorite WOD/movement?

Favorite is probably pull-ups, squat snatch or handstand push-ups

Least is for sure wallballs.

What is your most proud CrossFit moment?
Every time I hit a new PR! But my first Rope Climb was a pretty good feeling because I have a slight fear of heights.

What motivates you during a tough workout?

Remembering that I am blessed to have a body that is capable of doing whatever it is that I am trying to get through.  There are so many people that don’t have the capability to do some things that we take for granted.

What are your goals going forward and what do you think will help you achieve them?

I would love to improve at some of the gymnastics things that we do (toes to bar, handstand walks, muscle ups, etc.) and be able to Rx a WOD with double Unders in it.  Practice, Practice, Practice

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness or just day to day life since starting CrossFit?

I am in the best shape I’ve ever been in my life, so that’s awesome!  The best thing is that, since starting CrossFit I have noticed a huge improvement in my asthma.  I don’t even remember the last time I used my rescue inhaler and I used it frequently before starting CrossFit.  Also, I love that I am strong enough to be able to carry both of my kids at the same time.

What would you recommend to someone who is just starting out with CrossFit or is too afraid to try it?

Just try it!  Each person has a different level of fitness and Josh and Kate are really good at helping you figure where you are at and what you can do.  And give it more than one workout, because one day it may be all things that you don’t love or aren’t “good” at, but tomorrow may be all things that you actually enjoy.

If you could have one skill or characteristic of another member at CFA what and from whom would it be?

All of you that can do Double Unders and don’t look like you and the rope got in a fight at the end of the WOD, because that’s what I look like after all the practice.

Or which other CFA member are you the most motivated by?

Anyone who has had an injury or surgery and worked their way back to where they were or even better.

Coach's comment:

Abbey has been a consistent member for over 2 years now & is well deserving for April’s member of the month spot. She comes to class every morning ready to give it her all with a smile on her face. She has gained a huge amount of strength since joining with us and continues to improve in all other aspects. Congrats, Abbey!
