What was your athletic background, if any?

Not much, but I have been running for several years. 

What do you do when you're not at CFA?

I teach film at GVSU, so I watch a lot of movies, read a lot of scripts, and don’t have to feel guilty about binging Netflix.

When did you realize that CrossFit is right for you?

I had been interested in trying CrossFit for a while before I did. When I moved to Michigan for work, I decided it was good time to turn over a new leaf. I think I knew it was right for me from the beginning because I needed the motivation and someone to hold me accountable. And I also needed someone to tell me what to do. Kate and Josh are really good at that.

Do you remember your first WOD?

No idea.

What is your favorite or least favorite WOD/movement?

Least: Pull-ups and sled pulls/pushes, anything involving sleds. Obviously. 

What is the one thing you have done at CFA that you never thought you would do?

Double unders, because jumping rope was never something I was good at. 

What motivates you during a tough workout?

The other people doing it along with me. 

What's are your favorite things about CrossFit?

The community. Getting to know people and sharing the camaraderie. I was never very athletic as a kid, so CFA was the first time I ever had that. Also, it’s really empowering to look at the board when you come in and say to yourself, “there’s no way I’m finishing that,” and then finishing it. 

What are your short term and long term goals?

Short term: To get faster at the WODs and to continue the (incremental) gains I’m making at lifting.
Long term: To get good at pull ups and not hate them.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit (before/after?)
 I’ve built a lot of muscle that I didn’t have before, and I’ve gotten a lot stronger, though I know I still have a ways to go. I love lifting and actually consider it my therapy—a lot of awesome stress relief!

Do you have any advice for people just getting started at CFA?  
Do it. Keep doing it. Especially because it’s hard.

Aaron has been a consistent member since 2015. He shows up at least 5 days a week ready to work hard. He has recently shown great improvements in strength as well as squat depth. Aaron is very deserving of being member of the month and we look forward to seeing him continue to keep up & improve on his fitness.
