What was your athletic background, if any?

I was a runner at heart. I competed in Cross Country and track all four years of high school.

What do you do when you're not at CFA?

I work at BizStream, spend a lot of time with my family and also run a second business which is a wedding venue. On occasion, I may hop online and play a game or two. I also play guitar and sing at my church.

When did you realize that CrossFit is right for you?

After high school, it’s easy to not find any kind of fitness routine.  Yes you can join a gym and hope that you are in the mood to work out, but Crossfit is unlike anything I have done before.  It’s cardio (which I love) blended with weightlifting (which I’ve never really focused on in the past).  Top that off with an amazing team of people who challenge you and suffer with you, and it’s basically everything High School sports was, minus the psychotic and very competitive parents screaming at their children.

Do you remember your first WOD?

Unfortunately, it was 16.1. Welcome to CrossFit.

16.1 is
20 Min Amrap
50FT OH Lunge
8 BF Burpees
50 FT OH Lunge
8 Chest 2 bar pull-ups

What is your favorite or least favorite WOD/movement?

Least Favorite:  Squat Snatch/OHS.
Favorite:  Deadlift/DUs

What is the one thing you have done at CFA that you never thought you would do?

Handstand Pushups.  I have very weak shoulders and the first time I did a handstand pushup was a big deal for me.

What motivates you during a tough workout?

For me, it’s all about my family and my relationship with God.  Life can get hard at times and it’s easy to throw your hands up in the air and walk away from a challenging situation.  It’s in those moments that I find motivation in knowing that I should never quit and strive to overcome the scenario.  Progress is only built in those moments when you feel you can’t possibly do another rep, but you do one anyway.  Biblically, we are told to treat our bodies like a temple in which God himself dwells.  We need to make this body last and respect what we do to it daily.

What's are your favorite things about CrossFit?

Every time you go to Crossfit, you do something unique and different.  You aren’t sure what exactly to expect out of each workout, and that’s what truly keeps it fresh.  All you know is that it is going to be challenging.  Second would be the community.  Surrounding yourself with accountability partners is essential for the success of your physical fitness.  It’s easy to take a few days off and, before long, you haven’t worked out in months.  The CFA community make showing up every day worth it.

What are your short term and long term goals?

Short term: 300lb back squat in 2018/10 unbroken butterfly pull ups.
Long term: To master the ever-elusive squat snatch and get some actual weight over my head.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit (before/after?)

I had weighed a consistent 155lbs for a long time and was very flabby. After joining Crossfit and going for about two years, I am at 180lbs and much more toned.  No, my gut didn’t grow, but I did gain some muscle mass.  Sleep is infinitely better and for the first time, my shoulders actually have some definition to them (work in progress)

Do you have any advice for people just getting started at CFA?

Surround yourself with people that are willing to push you.  The workouts can be exhausting, but if you give it a minimum 3 months of consistent attendance, you will see improvements you never thought possible.  The great thing about Crossfit is seeing your benchmark performances from the previous year and improving upon them dramatically.  Don’t quit.  Focus on goals and surround yourself with CFA members who are just as passionate as you are about your health.

Quick Questions

Favorite Cheat Meal: Very very thick burger, fries and RANCH

Favorite Musician:  Too much music to answer that honestly.  Depends on the day.

Favorite Sports Team: Red Wings

Favorite TV Show: One of the best TV series in existence is Breaking Bad.

Favorite CrossFit Athlete (if any): Cliché but Rich Froning.  His power flows through my official Rogue Rich Froning endorsed speed rope.

Coach's comment:

Plain and simple, Josh has been very consistent since he started CrossFit over two years ago and his fitness has improved immensely. He is one of our favorite clients to push to his limits and challenge because he always responds with a positive attitude and his best effort. Coming from a running background de was not the strongest or most flexible when he started but through consistency and hard work both have gotten much better. I really think CrossFit has had a big impact on Josh's entire life and I don’t think he would have it any other way. We look forward to seeing continue to get better and crush it in the future.
