What was your athletic background, if any?

No athletic background. Does walking my dogs, hiking, or biking count? 

What do you do when you're not at CFA?

When I am not at CFA, I love spending time with my daughter, Sydney, son, Tyler, and our three dogs Koda, Kassy, and Khaila.  I also work full time at Amway in Corp IT, volunteer in the community for various organizations, and love to be busy outdoors… landscaping, hiking, biking, downhill skiing, swimming, etc.


When did you realize that CrossFit is right for you?

Day 1.   I had zero previous knowledge of CrossFit and was just looking for a local gym to workout.  I had tried a couple traditional gym facilities but lost interest immediately.  After day 1 at CFA, I found myself wanting to keep coming back.

Do you remember your first WOD?

I think it was during the basic elements class and when I realized how out of shape I was.
500m row, 40 air squats, 30 sit ups, 20 push-ups, 10 pull-ups

What is your favorite or least favorite WOD/movement?

Least: Overhead Squat
Favorite: Back Squat/Front Squat

What is the one thing you have done at CFA that you never thought you would do?

There are sooooo many to list… let’s start with weight lifting.  I had never lifted weights before, figured it was for experienced athletes only.

What motivates you during a tough workout?

Everyone in class, I push myself more when there are others around me and everyone in class is so supportive.

What's are your favorite things about CrossFit?

I love the CFA community
I love the fact that all I have to do is show up, Josh and Kate take care of the rest.
I love how every day at CFA brings a new, challenging workout
I love the feeling you get after just completing an amazingly challenging WOD

What are your short term and long term goals?

Short term: To Rx a workout
Long term: To Rx the majority of the workouts

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit (before/after?)

The major changes I have noticed first would be my strength and endurance. 
I definitely have changed some bad food behaviors and make better choices now. 
It also has been very rewarding to fit into some jeans I have not been able to wear in a while. :)

Do you have any advice for people just getting started at CFA?  

You can start CrossFit at any age and at any fitness level.  You may get frustrated at times, be patient and do not give up, you can do it !!!

Coach's comment:

Mary is the perfect example of how CrossFit can have such an impact on somebody’s life within a few months, not only physically but also mentally. When she first came into the gym she had a very limited knowledge of CrossFit and all the different exercises that we include and she will admit it herself she was a bit timid and overwhelmed by it. Fast forward 8 months and now everything is starting to seem like second nature, she’s done the open, an in-house competition and even the Tough Mudder!! There are no parts of her fitness that have not improved and it’s very noticeable! Mary is a prime example of how much improvement you can make in a short period of time while having fun doing it. She is always quick to smile and willing to push herself during every workout the best she can. Her positive attitude make her fun to be around and work with. We are excited to see her continue with her fitness journey in the future and see what it brings.
