What was your athletic background, if any?

I started off playing baseball, and then switched to tennis in high school. When I entered the military in 2000 I started general weightlifting.

What do you do when you're not at CFA?

I’m a desk jockey of sorts, as I happily perform duties as a Project Manager for Spectrum Health’s IS Digital department. I enjoy time with my wife and (3) kids, camping, watching Sparty football, and sometimes I like to do some obstacle course racing (Spartan Races or Tough Mudders).

When did you realize that CrossFit is right for you?

Immediately, because it kept me engaged. I’ve always enjoyed working out, but CrossFit actually makes working out fun. It’s hard work, but it’s rewarding when you see constant improvement. It’s definitely not boring like traditional workouts.

Do you remember your first WOD?

Some kind of craziness with snatches and handstand push-ups.

What is your favorite or least favorite WOD/movement?

Least: Rowing (for time)

Favorite: Cleans or Squats

What is the one thing you have done at CFA that you never thought you would do?

Full, deep squats – front and back. I used to have hip and flexibility issues preventing me from squatting properly. Since starting CrossFit, those issues are no longer.

What motivates you during a tough workout?

The clock, the hope of beating Kate in a WOD, and keeping up with (or beating) the younger folk.

What's are your favorite things about CrossFit?

All of it. The tough WODs, the PRs, the constant progression, the people, the swag. It’s all good, and I’m becoming addicted.

What are your short term and long term goals?

Short term: To not be a sissy on the Squat Snatch, and nail more than (7) consecutive double-unders.

Long term: Rx all workouts of a future CrossFit Open.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit (before/after?)

I’m bigger and broader throughout my upper body, and my legs have grown as well. I’m stronger than ever and much more flexible, and as I mentioned earlier I have no more pain in my hips. I’m much less stressed, happier overall, and constantly MOTIVATED.

Do you have any advice for people just getting started at CFA?

Show up and don’t get discouraged. Some of these workouts and movements seem crazy or impossible. They may appear to be something you “can’t” do, but you CAN. You just have to stick with it. Plus, you will have a group of people cheering you on every step of the way!

Quick Questions

Favorite Cheat Meal: Burgers and beer(s)

Favorite Musician: I don’t really have one

Favorite Sports Team: MSU Football

Favorite Tv Show: Game of Thrones

Favorite CrossFit Athlete (if any): Josh Bridges #payhim

Coach's comment:

Paul has worked hard every day since starting with us and has earned his spot at April’s member of the month. He is the perfect example of what CrossFit is about. Not only has he gotten a lot more physically fit, he has also noted that he is happier and less stressed now! These are the results that we love to hear. There is more to life than just being physically fit, the healthy mentality is equally as important. Paul has seen a huge increase in flexibility and now displays a perfect squat! We have loved seeing Paul progress while drinking the CrossFit koolaid and we look forward to seeing even more progress in the future. Keep up the awesome work, Paul!
