Josh Connelly

Growing up I was always a chubby kid but I have had a passion for fitness and exercise since high school and for CrossFit as soon as I did my first Wod. I started going to the YMCA the day after I finished my senior year of Tennis in High School. I started off just running and doing machines then I eventually started working with free weights. After a few years I got involved with Physique and bodybuilding shows. I was making my own diet plans to do these shows so I really got involved with nutrition and how macronutrients affect our bodies.. During my “cut” for my last bodybuilding show I started implementing CrossFit a few times a week for cardio instead of being bored to death on a stair-master or running. I was fortunate that my sister Kate dragged me to CrossFit the first few times because it didn’t take long to get hooked.

After my final physique was done I knew I was not going to do another one and wanted to stick with CrossFit. I am a very competitive person with a passion for working out and pushing the limits so naturally it was a good fit. I started CrossFit around March 2012 and have been doing it full time ever since. I graduated from U of M – Flint in May 2013 with a double major in Marketing and Spanish. After numerous internships I knew I did not want to sit behind a desk all day waiting to work-out, I wanted to make my passion my career. I did attend one semester of graduate school in the fall of 2013, but knew what I wanted to do the whole time. Before that semester was done Kate and I had been looking immensely for places to open a box. We stumbled upon Allendale and a nice sized warehouse that would be perfect for us, came and looked at it and knew it was perfect. Knowing nobody we moved across the State in March 2014 and haven’t looked back since.

I am so fortunate and thankful to be in the position as owner and coach at CrossFit Allendale. The people I have met since we opened have changed my life and I can’t wait to see our members and community grow into the future.

Quick Questions

First Wod: 3 Rounds: 400m Run, 30 Wallballs, 20 AMSU, 1 Rope climb. I didn’t know how to climb a rope so I just did them legless.

Favorite Cheat Meal:  Anything that involves Pizza, burritos, wings and lots of ranch.

Favorite Musician: Im big into all types of music. My Top 5 Spotify artists are Mike Posner, MGK, NF, Kygo and Sam Hunt.

Kate Connelly

As a kid, I was never into sports or exercise. Running the mile once a week in middle school would make me nervous because I was never athletic. The summer after my freshman year of high school, I started working out with a personal trainer, Paul. I have to say that Paul changed my life forever. He made me fall in love with exercise. He introduced me to CrossFit during my senior year of high school and I loved it. I dragged Josh to the intro class with me and we never looked back. It was exactly what we needed, something where you always have room for improvement, that is fun, & allows you to meet people from all walks of life. CrossFit has not only made me fitter but has also given me another family. I love the community aspect of CrossFit. 

I graduated from Grand Valley State University with a B.S. in Exercise Science in 2016 and a Masters of Public Health with an emphasis in Health Promotion in 2019. I am also a ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist and as of June 2018, a CrossFit-Level 2 Trainer. Not only do I have a passion for fitness but I also have a passion for educating others on the importance of being active and living a healthy lifestyle. CrossFit has allowed me to change people’s lives and help them realize that they can do anything that they set their mind to. I am so grateful for all of the people who have walked through CFA’s doors and made it what is it today.
